DIELA'S FLOWERS
Both of Diela’s grannies used to work at the market. She started coming with her mother, Amina from a very young age but started working full time at the age of 15. Diela got her space at the market from a man called Mr Mitchell.
“We are all cousins, brothers and sisters, but we sometimes fight like cats and dogs because of the competition” She tells me, “I was born in a banana box, raised on the market and still on the market” “…I’m so popular around the world. The Voice, The Argus people; I contacted them and I sent the message out that I wanted the parliament to come to me…” “They wanted to close off adderley street for Valentine’s Day which is our best selling day of the year.”
“I was making ‘scandaal’, everyday I was fighting for them to change the day” Diela’s determination paid off. “You know the movie The men in black? There were 6 guys and one in the front that were looking for Delia and I thought they were clients but they were from the parliament and they gave me the letter. They changed the opening of parliament a week later.”
